Costa rica: Jungle Camping, Mountain Backroads and Beach Time

Categories Central America

Crossing the border into Costa Rica as a group was fun and went smooth until the border guys started fooling with us! They sold insurances to 3 of us, and then declared to take a 30 minute break just before Flo could get his. Followed by him having to make random copies of the outside of his passport. Finally we were let into the country and after a few kilometers we reached the Finca Canas Castilla, run by a Swiss Couple. Hiking the trails on the grounds of the finca, followed by a delicious homemade Swiss dinner and camping in the jungle surrounded by wildlife – what a great first stop in Costa Rica.

Our ways parted heading into the mountain to explore some fun muddy backroads around Monte Verde, passing by Lake Arenal and the Volcano Arenal – which was covered in clouds, so we can only assume it was there. It was pretty damp and rainy up in the mountains so we ventured down to the beach and ran into Josh and Johanna again. Costa Rica felt much safer compared to the rest of the countries we had travelled through since the US – it was really lovely to ride through backroads and roam around exploring hiking trails and lonely beaches, without encountering shotguns around every corner. On the other hand the driving style of the people had deteriorated– let’s see what Panama has to offer!
